There’s No Obligation

We offer two trainings, both of which fulfill the NC Licensing requirement.
• GPS MAPP Training– a group class offered multiple times throughout the year. Sessions are held in the evenings, 3 hours per week for 10 weeks.
• Deciding Together – an individual class scheduled to meet the needs of each family.  The class is 7 weeks, with 2-3 hour sessions per week.

Those who attend training can “opt out” at any time. Those who which to become licensed will complete additional requirements, including a home visit.

Bridging the Gap

Full time foster families bridge the gap for parents who are working to resolve the issues that caused the child to be removed from the home so that they can be safely reunited with their children.

Part time/respite foster care parents may care for children between placements and/or when regular foster parents are sick, need a break, or otther.

Age of Children

While ages range from newborns to teenagers, most of the children placed through our foster care program are age six and younger. One third are medically fragile infants — born prematurely, with addictions, and other challenges.  We are honored to partner with families to provide nurturing, loving homes for these children.

Length of Stay

Length of stay is typically 9 to 12 months, but varies depending on the needs of the child and their biological family’s participation in their case plan. However, when parents are unable or unwilling to care for their child, or if the child is an orphan, the child can become available for guardianship or adoption.

How do children get matched with me?

We work with each family to make placements that are as stable as possible, enabling both the child and the foster family to thrive in their new relationship. Both the child’s needs and the foster family’s circumstances are considered in order to ensure the best possible fit.

Will I have support?

In addition to your assigned case worker, foster parents have access to:

  • our 24/7 on call services
  • ongoing training & support meeting CEU requirements
  • opportunities for youth to be involved in campus events and retreats
  • tutoring and educational supports

Financial Assistance

To help you meet your foster child’s basic needs for food, shelter, and education, Black Mountain Home pays foster parents monthly. Children in care are also eligible for free lunch, day care vouchers, and state medical care.

What is Shared Parenting?

Caring for Children is Caring for Families

When appropriate, we encourage foster parents to build positive relationships with biological parents. Seeing harmony and collaboration among the adults in their lives contributes to the child’s sense of identity, safety, and self worth.
